Treatments Available to Break Your Addictions
What is an Addiction?
Addiction involves craving for something intensely, loss of control over its use, and continuing involvement with it despite adverse consequences. Addiction changes the brain, first by subverting the way it registers pleasure and then by corrupting other normal drives such as learning and motivation. Although breaking an addiction is tough, it can be done.
What Causes an Addiction?
The word “addiction” is derived from a Latin term for “enslaved by” or “bound to.” Anyone who has struggled to overcome an addiction—or has tried to help someone else to do so—understands why.
Addiction exerts a long and powerful influence on the brain that manifests in three distinct ways: craving for the object of addiction, loss of control over its use, and continuing involvement with it despite adverse consequences.
For many years, experts believed that only alcohol and powerful drugs could cause addiction. Neuroimaging technologies and more recent research, however, have shown that certain pleasurable activities, such as gambling, shopping, and sex, can also co-opt the brain.
Although a standard U.S. diagnostic manual (the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition or DSM-IV) describes multiple addictions, each tied to a specific substance or activity, consensus is emerging that these may represent multiple expressions of a common underlying brain process.
Low-level laser therapy for smoking cessation operates on principles similar to the 5,000 year old ancient Asian healing art of Acupuncture. Quit smoking laser therapy is known to reduce tension, increase circulation, and enable the body to relax more deeply.
Research has shown that smokers, alcohol and drugs addicts, compulsive gamblers and overeaters have higher blood/endorphin levels than non-addicts. Stimulated by routinely inhaling nicotine, taking a drug or alcohol, endorphin production is constantly being ‘nudged up’ above normal level. Knowing that endorphin is a pleasure/satisfaction neurochemical, it makes perfect sense that addicts are satisfied until that level starts to drop and out come the addictive substances again. When, for example, smokers just quit smoking their blood/endorphin level drops substantially causing dissatisfaction and in some cases anxiety. Quit smoking laser treatment is the easist way to eliminate those feelings.
Hypnosis is defined as an altered state of awareness in which you appear to be asleep or in a trance. Clinical hypnosis may be used to treat certain physical or psychological problems. For instance, it is frequently used to help patients control pain. It is also used in a wide range of other conditions such as weight issues, speech disorders, and addiction problems.
During hypnosis for smoking cessation, a patient is often asked to imagine unpleasant outcomes from smoking. For example, the hypnotherapist might suggest that cigarette smoke smells like truck exhaust, or that smoking will leave the patient’s mouth feeling extremely parched.
Spiegel’s method is one popular smoking cessation hypnosis technique that focuses on three main ideas:
- Smoking poisons the body
- You need your body to live
- You should respect your body and protect it (to the extent you’d like to live)
The hypnotherapist teaches the smoker self-hypnosis, and then asks him or her to repeat these affirmations anytime the desire to smoke occurs.

There are 12 step programs available free of charge to anyone who wishes to access them and these are available in most communities in North America. For many people, drugs, alcohol, food, sex, internet, gambling etc., starts off as something fun to do or a way to blow off steam at the end of a difficult day. In some situations, these behaviors can take over as the primary way to cope with difficulties in life and eventually become the only coping strategy used. In cases like this, addiction counselors assist clients to identify the problem areas in their lives and then learn healthier coping strategies to deal with their challenges. Over time, these new behaviors become easier to access and more comfortable to practice.
